Preparing a Will for the Future

Ensure your wishes are respected and your family is protected. We provide expert advice on all types of wills in Japan.

Why Prepare a Will?

A will is the most effective way to prevent family disputes and ensure your assets are distributed exactly as you wish. In Japan, strict formal requirements must be met for a will to be legally valid.

"I want to ensure my spouse can stay in our home."

Without a will, property distribution is governed by legal heirship, which might require selling the home to settle other heirs' shares.

"I want to leave assets to someone who is not a legal heir."

A will is the only way to leave part of your estate to siblings, grandchildren, or friends who are not automatically identified as heirs.

"My heirs don't get along, and I'm worried about disputes."

A clear will reduces ambiguity and provides the legal basis for distribution, significantly lowering the risk of conflict.

Types of Wills

Notarial Will

Drafted by a Notary Public. It is stored at the Notary Office, ensuring it cannot be lost or tampered with. Most recommended for legal certainty.

Self-written Will

Entirely handwritten by you. While simpler, it must follow strict rules and should be probated by the court (unless using the Legal Affairs Bureau storage service).
